This sympathetic contemporary rebuild of an extension on a listed cottage was designed to bring additional light into the original house while creating a bright and warm family kitchen. Further work was carried out throughout the house to restore and expose original beams and stonework highlighting the traditional aesthetic.

Traditional Devon cottages with small windows and low ceilings and can be dark inside compared to modern homes. Making the family kitchen as light as possible not only provides a contrast within the home, but also enabled us to bring borrowed light through to the living room next door.

The traditional timber frame and oak beams with pegged joints link the extension effortlessly to the main house. The simplicity of the structure alongside the original thatched cottage adds a sense of modern space and light without detracting from the vernacular Devon form.
