This sympathetic contemporary oak framed extension to a Grade II Listed cottage was designed to flood light into the original house while creating a bright and spacious family kitchen. Further work was carried out throughout the house to restore spaces and expose original beams and stonework highlighting the traditional aesthetic.

Traditionally Devon cottages with their small windows and low ceilings can be dark inside, when compared to modern homes. Making the new extended family kitchen as light as possible not only provides a contrast within the home, but also enabled us to bring borrowed light through to the living room next door.

The traditional timber frame and oak beams with pegged joints effortlessly lend a timeless quality to the extension, helping it to sit comfortably alongside the historic cottage. The simplicity of the modern structure alongside the original thatched cottage adds modern space and light without detracting from the vernacular Devon form or character of the older parts of the home.
