This site was previously a brownfield commercial site, having housed a cattery and kennels in a random assortment of outbuildings across an otherwise beautiful 3 acre field. We were commissioned to design the entire campsite which started with clearing away as many of the redundant and decaying old buildings and cleaning up the site, and identifying the locations for the key buildings to be retained.

The campsite is focused around a beautiful oak framed central social hub, itself a replacement for an old asbestos clad chicken barn on the same spot. The building is flexibly designed to accommodate a wide range of uses from campsite dining to groups and gatherings, special events, or classes like yoga and meditation.  This space provides campers with the opportunity for year round activities within the site in all weather.  The building was designed along the lines of an agricultural barn with simple timber cladding and corrugated metal roofing along with louvers over all of the openings creating a dappled light inside and maintaining the simple functional aesthetic.

The campsite caters for a small number of campervans and tents in large plots set within a natural tree lined landscape, complimented by a row of small functional camping cabins from local Designer-Maker, Mokki.  We were also asked to design the facilities which are shared between all campers, that aim to be spacious and luxurious whilst continuing the simple functional materials and style of the whole site.  The simple palette of materials across the entire site helps to lend the campsite a peaceful and relaxing feel, and the natural timber barn-like buildings blend well with the rural surroundings.
